Perconte at Galerie Charlot

Exhibition from the 16th of April to the 7th of June 2014. Opening on 17th of April from 6:30 pm.

Alpi,dicembre Film infini . A new step towards abstraction.

Jacques Perconte is once again on show at Galerie Charlot, under the title " "From East to West". "He invites us in a trip through his generative films. The infinite mouvement of the images creates explosions of colors and unexpected abstract forms in real time. They surprise the spectator by their force and pictorial texture".

Each progress in image technologies gives way to artist exploration of their limits and failings. Dithering effects out of paper grain, and even "touch" effects of the brush by the impressionists were among the first. Special Chemical photography brought the opportunies of over/under exposition, grain, or sophisticated techniques like solarization or Man Ray's researches. Cinema widened the opportunies, and so did analog video (see for example [Parfait]) with a high period in the 1970's-1980's.

Perconte focuses (without punning) on digital compression/decompression techniques, with impressive and diverse effects. He is even able to use generative art techniques, a variety of live coding, and cooperation, in real time or not, with musicians.

This Spring 2014 exposition does not bring new techniques, but confirms an increased mastership of the effects, a more classical stylistic research, and a wider variety of material presentations.

- Effects. The first tim I saw Perconte's work, I found that some of his glich effects were rather crude, looking more as programming bugs than aesthetic effects. I would not say that today... perhaps because my eyes are learning to appreciate this form of art. After all, when I was a child, Van Gogh and even Monet did not please me at all.

- Style. On the first show, the most impressive work was the film After the fire (2012), brutal in its glitch effects and its fauvist colors. Today's works are generally milder, be they quite abstract (Alp dicembre) or near to the impressionist palette (Seaside).

. Material presentations. As many Charlot Gallery's artists, Perconte propses now prints (mounted on aluminum plates). An easier way for collectors to enter in this very specific kind of digital art.
