Multimedia is a transitory concept, after audio-visual for instance. Cross-media and transmedia are more in the winds of the 2010's.
"Interdisciplinary", "Multimodal" and "Transdisciplinary" can be considered , from the arts standpoint, as synonym of multimedia, with more academic connotations and uses.
It could be useful to make a difference betwen:
- multimedia works, using several media in the same work (a minima, image and sound)
- multimedia artists using different media in different works (we use this category as a solution to otherwise unclassifiable.

In his introduction Steve Gibson explains that transdisciplinary art "implies a level of direct connection and cross-over between mediums: the artist also becomes the engineer, the engineer becomes the artist, and when they collaborate they actually have enough expertise in the other's fiels to be able to address concerns across the mediums and even across discipines".
